VG Ladies : Relm

Part of a series of video game ladies that have been my favorites as I grew up with them.


Relm from Final Fantasy VI


This must look like a strange addition to the group, but when you consider playing Final Fantasy as a nine or ten year old girl who loves to draw, this makes more sense.

Relm is a wildly successful artist, a young girl, and she is so good at painting she can use it to fight. I admired Relm so much when I was, essentially, her age. Even though when I played the game, she wasn't as useful as the people who whipped out a sword or even a deck of cards, I loved that she existed and that she was who she was. A little girl who loved to make pictures, just like me! And she was a character who was doing things!

There were so few artists in the media I saw - even just people who enjoyed drawing as a hobby - that I latched onto the idea of Relm. I copied the Amano drawings of her over and over and over, I just wanted to absorb her greatness.
