Susan to Clara in TARDIS outfits ~

I've been working on this project off and on for a few years.  I had to add Rory and Clara to the original lineup because I've been doing it so long!

Tumblr for larger full image and close ups!

---

I am doing prints of this image in many formats, check here for info!

Please do not ask me where a particular character is. I chose who I chose for a reason, not because I 'forgot' someone. Please just enjoy the thirty-three people who are here and respect the time and effort that went into this.

My id: WHERE'S THE BRIG
My superego: The artist did say that she didn't forget everyone and she made decisions for a reason...
My id: SHE FORGOT THE BRIG NO ONE WOULDN'T CHOOSE HIM
My ego: Sorry about those two... nice work!

Note: I may have gotten those terms mixed up.

I'd just like to say that I can't decide if I like Victoria's, Romana 1's or Nyssa's dress the best. No question though, about Steven's outfit being my favourite of the men's clothes.

I like the drawing, but it seems criminally disrespectful that you not included the Brigadier and Sergeant Benton and Captain Yates.

I think it's disrespectful to me to make comments like this when it says right in the description that I had reasons for choosing the people I did and didn't want to be constantly hearing about the people who are not in this lineup.

This is really nice! I love the characterization of each individual companion! Yes, people are complaining about other companions not being there, yatta yatta yatta, but these are the only real full time companions that are even considered companions by Doctor Who and the BBC...... It is really nice! I can't believe it took you so long and you didn't give up on it! I tend to give up on projects that take too long and get bored or tired with them. That is my downfall. But you would have wasted all that effort if you had, so good for you!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I pretty much went for the ones who were billed as companions - the kind that would spawn special BBC announcements when they're announced or that we would refer to as companions when talking to someone who wasn't really INTO the show.  I had to put a line somewhere, you know? Otherwise this chain would expand by another 15 people at least!

I tend to give up on long term things, too! Especially when they don't have little payoff benchmarks somewhere along the way.  Since I didn't show this publicly until it was done, it was only me cheering myself on and that was part of what took it so long!   What I did to keep myself going was avoid doing all of my favorites at once and just sort of pepper them in, and saving my biggest favorite for last, so there'd always be a reward for doing the ones that I wasn't as fond of or weren't as interesting.  I couldn't do the line up in order because I was worried you'd see a clear increase in skill from Susan to Clara if the project took too long, and if I did all my favorites first, I knew there'd be characters I never got to, so it was sort of tricking my own habits to work for me, haha.

Thank you!

That was probably wise. I would have done the same thing if I had done the ones I really wanted to do first. What order did you pick to ensure you would finish btw?

I don't know the exact order of all 33 because I went back and altered a lot of files when I was finished, but I know I did Peri first because I'm not fond of her and her outfit was easy to give this project a try with, and then Turlough because I adore him and his outfit was simple.  Once I had the method I was going to approach this with, I did Vicki, Rose, Barbara, Steven, Zoe, Tegan, Adric, Romana I, Dodo, Nyssa, Susan, Victoria, Mel, Sarah Jane, and Polly.   Then I took a huge, huge break and did Leela.  After that it gets a bit fuzzy, but I know I saved Jamie for last, just because he's my favorite and I've drawn him enough times that he wouldn't give me too much likeness trouble.

In some cases it was that I really liked the character and needed to hold myself back, in others it was that I really liked the outfit but maybe not the character!   I'm much more fond of Classic Who, so doing the new kids was really slow and bleh for me, but I really liked Clara's dress, so she got done after I made myself do Ian's boring cardigan, haha.  I really liked doing Tegan's sweater, so I did Adric after her because I don't like him very much, and then did Romana I because I really like her AND her dress.  I looped back one person later to do Nyssa because she completed a TARDIS team and it was satisfying to put them all together.  So it wasn't always 'one I like, one I don't' because I don't have a half and half split like that, but I tried to be mindful of how many SUPER FAVES I was using up when and use good momentum on characters I was less fond of.

Sometimes I did trade offs like, "I really love Ace's character, but her outfit is really not that exciting, so I'll do her and then do someone I don't like as well, but has a fun outfit!"    I wasn't even going to do K-9 at first, but one day when this project was really dragging, I thought, "I'll do the damn dog.  He'll go really quick, I'll make him a TARDIS collar, and it'll get me moving again."  So I got to add one more to the tally and it spurred me on to have energy to struggle with Grace and Rory, who had really difficult faces for me (and in Rory's case, a boring outfit).

All in all, I tried to think for every one of them, "This person could be someone's favorite companion," so that I was respectful to all of them and made something everyone could enjoy.

Also, that was really nice to think that someone you don't like could be someone's favorite companion so do them justice! What a good way to look at it!

Haha, well, I went for poses that were appropriate for each character, as well as wardrobe, and since I always think of Donna as capable and not backing down, I had to go with something strong like that.  That you thought of superwoman and thus that she was part timelord at one point is fantastic~ :D

This is brilliant.  Your art usually has great attention to detail (which I imagine is hard to do especially with the watercolor ones), but this is outstanding.  The incorporation of stars, though stars don't feature on the original TARDIS, adds extra spice to the already wide variety of costumes.  I'm really glad you stayed with this for however many years.  The only (small) downside is now I really want TARDIS Jamie's outfit.  Curses!

Thank you very much!
I thought the bits of galaxy stuff here and there gave it a nice touch.  Like they'd all been touched by the stars or something mystical like that~  It also helped break up the monotony of blue on blue on blue a little!

Haha, you're not the only person I've seen wanting to wear one of the outfits in here! That's really pleasing :D

Quite a fantastic line-up!  I'm not often in love with TARDIS inspired fashion, but you've got some really great ideas in here, from simple and vague representations to more fancy and bold representations.  A very very nice and wide selection of styles.  I love it!

Thank you for saying so! I wanted to keep the designs within the realm of something you could see the character wearing or choosing to wear, and I also didn't want to overwhelm or use exactly the same elements on every person, so it became a fun sort of challenge to select all the styles.

Thank again~

Really? I drew and designed for thirty three selected people over a period of three years and the only comment you can think to leave is basically 'why didn't you do more'?  What a rude thing to do.
