May from Shining Force II

To say that Shining Force and Final Fantasy 6 were big influences on me in elementary school is the largest understatement ever. This is the last one from that set of games, though.

Shining Force, but May in particular, started my brief obsession with centaurs, and just fueled my fascination with archers. She showed up saying, "I'm a centaur, but I can use a bow and arrows!" For some reason, this single line really endeared me to her and I decided this was something she had done despite protests from her family and her culture. That she was cheery and confident about everything made me like her too. Like, "Hells yeah, I can use a bow! And it's great! I'm totally different than everyone else, and it's fabulous! "

So much of my love for the Shining Force girls is what I projected onto them, since they didn't get to do much beyond their introductions. I didn't really know I was making up fuller characters than were actually presented, I didn't really even know I was making up better 'role models' than 'meekly heals everyone'.
